Cyber 170 Series 800 name plate
What's identifiably left of three Cyber 170/825 mainframes that were installed in the Rhodes Struben Building computer room. Two of these machines were actively used, and the third was purchased second hand from JCI in the midst of sanctions fever as a "cold swap" machine.
The first Cyber ran from about 1982 through to 1995. The second Cyber ran from about 1987 through to 1993 when Plato usage peaked and the service was sold to local schools and remote institutions like the National Institute of Personnel Research in Johannesburg and Cape Town.
