2561 synchronous comms card for the Cyber

This is one of the Control Data CLA (communication line adapter) cards from the Cyber 2550 NPU (network processing unit or front end processor, FEP). The synchronous cards weren't that common - Rhodes had two compared to about 48 of the 2560 serial CLA's. This particular one was used to provide an RSCS link between the two Rhodes Cybers, RUPLA (the Plato system), and RURES (the research/admin system).

It was the shortest "wide area" link possible - a 10 cm cross over cable between the two ports.

The other sync CLA was used to talk to the Vax over in Physics, and via a dialup modem to an IBM VM system at Potch.

The NPU was a shared peripheral between the two Cybers and was linked to each by means of a channel cable. Ports, or port ranges were configured to be active in one or the other (but not both) systems. So two ports on the same card could be talking to different mainframes.
